Plans continue...
Peel L&P’s development of Port Salford is proposed to be the UK’s first tri-modal inland waterway port and logistics hub which is to be served by ship, rail and road. This ground-breaking development is to include a rail link, container terminal facility, inland port and the planning approved 1.5m sq ft of logistics floor space.
Port Salford will support 16 trains a day and has the capacity to support full European 775m-long trains, with good rail access to the Port of Liverpool and to the West Coast Main Line north and south.
Peel L&P has already invested £30m in highway improvements through the Western Gateway Infrastructure Scheme and a funding partner for the delivery of the rail line and terminal have been secured along with a rail terminal operator.
The works packages are currently being tendered to enable the rail works to commence in summer 2022 with an expected completion of December 2024. It is considered this new rail freight terminal will ease rail freight traffic through Manchester Piccadilly.
