intu Trafford Centre’s Barton Square undergoes incredible transformation as the build reaches its half-way point and the vast glazed dome is complete

24 June 2019

intu Trafford Centre has reached the significant half-way milestone in the £75m development of Barton Square, in which over 110,000 sq ft of additional shopping space will be added.

Since the build began in 2018, over 200,000 hours have been dedicated to dramatically overhauling Barton Square in order to create the newly designed upper level, which will be home to exciting new brands.

A stunning glass dome which replicates the centre’s Main Dome and also the dome in St Paul’s Cathedral is now completely glazed and visible to passers by. Constructed from over 1,800 pieces of glass, it weighs over 250 tonnes.

Elegant grandeur

Along with the impressive exterior development, the interior has also undergone a major transformation. Eye-catching marble and granite sourced from around the world, including Brazil, Italy and India, have been used to develop the luxurious flooring and statues.

In keeping with the grandeur of intu Trafford Centre, Barton Square will be elegantly lined with 36 palm trees, 20 marble seats, 120 urns and a total of 120 statues. Additionally, a splash of splendour will be provided by a stunning fountain as the centrepiece.

Complementing the existing retail and leisure facilities already at the centre such as Next Home, Home Sense and Laura Ashley Home as well as destinations like LEGOLAND Discovery Centre and SEA LIFE – the all new Barton Square will be home to a range of exciting brands all under one impressive new roof.

Hotly anticipated Primark store

This includes the hotly-anticipated two-storey, flagship Primark store which has been a major talking point within the region and will take a space equivalent to two football pitches.

Barton Square will also have an additional 350 parking spaces created including additional facilities for charging electric vehicles.

The grand opening of intu Trafford’s Centre’s Barton Square will take place in spring 2020.
Alison Niven, Regional Centre Director at intu Trafford Centre said: “Things are rapidly moving forward with the development as we draw ever closer to opening. Main structures are in place and the final piece of glazing on the spectacular main dome has now been completed. Soon exciting new retail partners will be able to take space and bring new shopper experiences.”
